What a graphite pencil portrait looks like
Tone does the work. Form is built from layered graphite shading rather than outlines, so cheekbones, fabric folds and fur read as light and shadow instead of drawn edges.
Highlights are the untouched white of the paper, deepest shadows are dense graphite, and everything in between is a smooth tonal transition. Visible pencil grain keeps it looking hand-drawn.
Detail and focus
Eyes, mouth and hairline carry the sharpest detail. Clothing and background fade into lighter, looser drawing so the face holds attention.
Paper and edges
The drawing sits on warm-white fine-art paper with soft, unfinished edges rather than a hard rectangular crop — the same way a real drawing sits on a sheet.
Which photos suit pencil best
Pencil is unbeatable for structure: strong bone structure, character lines, wrinkles, whiskers, short coats and dramatic light.
It is also the right answer for black-and-white originals, old family photographs and any portrait you want to feel formal, restrained and permanent.
Pencil versus watercolour
Choose pencil for heirloom, hallway and study pieces, for monochrome interiors, and for memorial portraits where quietness matters.
Choose watercolour when colour is part of the memory — a garden, a summer dress, a ginger cat. Both can be unlocked from the same photo at $5 each.
Printing a graphite portrait
Smooth matte paper preserves fine tonal gradation. Heavily textured paper can break up delicate shading in the face.
- Print at 300 DPI, up to 40 × 50 cm / 16 × 20 in
- Choose smooth matte or lightly textured fine-art paper
- Ask your printer not to boost contrast — mid-tones matter
- Frame in black, oak or brass with a white mount
- Non-reflective glazing keeps the greys readable
