How a pet photo becomes a portrait

The whole process takes about a minute and happens in three steps: upload the photo, choose watercolour or pencil, then unlock the full-resolution file.

Every portrait is built directly from your own photograph, so markings, coat length, ear shape and eye colour are carried across rather than replaced with a generic animal.

1. Choosing the right photo

Daylight is your best friend. A photo taken near a window or outdoors on a bright but overcast day gives the clearest detail in fur and eyes.

Get down to your pet's eye level if you can, fill most of the frame with them, and avoid heavy zoom or flash. A slightly imperfect snapshot with good light beats a posed photo in a dark room.

2. Picking a style

Watercolour suits pets with warm coats, soft fur and expressive eyes, and works well in bright rooms and nurseries.

Pencil drawing suits strong facial structure, whiskers, wrinkles and short coats, and sits comfortably in studies, hallways and monochrome interiors.

3. Printing and framing

Matte or textured fine-art paper flatters both styles. Glossy paper can fight with the soft edges of watercolour.

A simple mount with 4–5 cm of white space around the artwork makes a $5 download look like gallery work. Reusing a vintage frame is often the most beautiful option of all.

Which pets work well?

Dogs and cats are the most requested, but the same process works for horses, rabbits, guinea pigs, birds and reptiles. Anything with a clear photo can be painted or drawn.

Multiple pets in one photo stay as multiple pets — the same number of animals, the same sizes and the same closeness as in the original. Pets photographed with their owners are kept together too, which is often the version families treasure most.

Memorial pet portraits

Many people order a portrait after losing a pet. A slightly blurry phone photo, a print photographed on a table or an old scan is usually enough to work from.

A portrait shifts the memory away from the last difficult weeks and back to the animal at their best. If this is your reason for ordering, our guide to memorial portraits explains what to look for in an older photograph.

Why families choose BrushedArts

There is no minimum order, no account and no subscription. You pay once, for the file you have already seen.

You keep full control of the print: the size, the paper, the frame and the price you pay your local printer. That is why a $5 download often ends up as the most personal piece of art in the house.
